Jaka Čop comes from a large mountaineering family of Čops, among whom the most famous is certainly Jakov`s uncle, alpinist, mountain guide and rescuer Joža Čop. Jakov`s father Jakob was also a great mountain lover, mountain guide and long-time owner of the Golica hut. His mother Ivana owned a café in the middle of Jesenice. This was the reason that Jaka was a waiter after his primary education. Due to a knee injury, he was unable to do this job. He got a job at the Jesenice ironworks, where he worked in the technical office until his retirement.

The home café was a meeting place and gathering place for many famous mountaineers. Full of experiences from the mountains, they awakened in Jak a curiosity and love for the mountain world, to which he dedicated his entire life. He was especially fond of the Soča - Trenta valley, which he first encountered in his childhood in the fairy tale about Zlatorog. From then on, the desire to experience the wild world among the high mountains never left him. He traveled and hiked all over the Alps and all of Europe, even ventured to America, and his constant companion on all his journeys was his camera.

He took his first photograph at the age of ten, and his role model was the Jesenice photographer Fran Pavlin. He was a member of the Skala Tourist Club, which not only raised Slovenian alpinism to the highest level, but also artistic photography. Jaka studied and honed his skills in the amateur photography section of the Jesenice branch of the Skala Tourist Club, and soon his first successes were visible. After World War II, he participated in many exhibitions at home and abroad and received numerous awards and recognitions for his photographs. He further developed the achievements of pre-war mountain photography in his works. His eye was especially trained for black and white photography. He was a master of observing light and shadows, of the scene that nature had set for him. Taking into account the laws of compositional construction of the shot, the sense for coordinating light parts and determining the right crop, his ingenuity and patience, he relied primarily on his own intuition and chose motifs according to the instructions of his heart. All of this was captured through the camera`s eye in photographs that can be admired in the books Svet med vrhovi, Raj pod Triglavom, Viharniki, Kraljestvo Zlatoroga, Slovenski kozolec, Trenta in Soča. By skillfully composing the background of the mountain landscape with the foreground of the valleys and life in them, he was able to create both a romantic atmosphere and a realistic testimony of a time that has passed. In addition to the aesthetic, his photographs also have great documentary value by recording the former richness of the cultural landscape and agricultural activities.

With many slide lectures, he was responsible for the popularization of mountain photography and the mountain world. Through the fairy tale of Zlatorog, he presented the beauties of his kingdom to more than 70,000 schoolchildren. He presented his photographs at more than 60 solo and even more group exhibitions, and he also published them in various domestic and foreign books, newspapers and magazines. He was an unsurpassed ambassador of our Julian Alps, and in the last years of his life, also of the Triglav National Park associated with them.

The Slovenian mountain and highland world found its best, most faithful portrayer in him, who managed to capture it from all angles in his decades of intense photographic work.
