The text is in Chinese and English. From the introduction Paper-Cut….Self-Portrait of Folkways. The various nationalities of their world call their unique living conditions succeeded generation after generation folkways. However, these folkways will gradually disappear from people s vision as time goes by. Only art can faithfully record the times which have disappeared or are disappearing. Paper-Cut, as a folk art which is itself one of the folkways, with its extensive subject-matters and outstanding details, has depicted the parent-body of folkways most concentratedly and in an all round way. In a sense, isn t it a self-portrait of folkways? The folk paper-cuttings selected here form a miniature of the common living customs of the people on the Western Sichuan Plain in West China related to various respects of people s life, from which you are hoped to be able to appreciate all the beauties which are difficult to get today….The book s pages are cardboard. There are fourteen exquisite red-paper cut-outs on the right side of the book when opened. Each paper cut-out is held in place with a clear mylar sheet. On the left side is a description of the cultural event depicted in the cut-out together with a photograph depicting the cultural event. There are 14 of these in the book. A wonderful display of the cultural events/activities of the people from the Sichuan region of China.
