Knjiga velikog formata je u celosti (korice, listovi, povez) odlično očuvana: listovi su potpuno čisti i ravni, nigde nema podvlačenja, dopisivanja, obeležavanja i sl., i čvrsto su povezani međusobno i sa koricama. Knjiga je štampana na kvalitetnom papiru i obogaćena sa preko 600 ilustracija crno-belih i u koloru. U gornjem slobodnom uglu mala neupadljiva bleda fleka od prosute tečnosti, prikazano na jednoj od slika, ali treba imati u vidu da je na slici samo detalj pa izgleda mnogo veće i upadljivije nego u prirodi.

Prepared as a catalogue for a photographic exhibition held in Thessaloniki in 1997 in conjunction with the `Cultural Capital of Europe` celebrations, the volume under review far exceeds its original purpose. Representing the first systematic attempt to examine the heterogeneous architectural heritage of the Balkan Peninsula, the exhibit and catalogue address not the religious architecture as is the normal focus of the medieval architectural studies, but the surviving - and, indeed, the survival of the secular architecture. With catalogue entries written by more than sixty authors, the book brings together ninety-four monuments, including urban entities, town fortifications, fortresses, citadels and forts, towers, palaces and houses, public buildings, public baths, bridges, water supply, and industrial buildings. These are introduced by two general essays addressing the issues of the historical development and historical preservation, written by the two editors.
