Helmut and Alison Gernsheim`s
A Concise History of Photography is a seminal text on the history of the medium, covering both the technical innovations and the artistic developments from the camera obscura through the mid-20th century. Widely acclaimed and authoritative, it became a standard reference in the field.
The book features hundreds of illustrations showcasing the works of photography`s most important figures, including Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre, William Henry Fox Talbot, Julia Margaret Cameron, and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Synopsis
The book is divided into two main sections:

Technique and equipment: This part covers the technical evolution of photography, including early photochemistry, the invention of daguerreotypes and calotypes, advances in camera design, and the development of color photography.
Pictures and their makers: This section explores the aesthetic achievements of photography and its role across different genres, such as:
Social documentation
War reportage
Portraiture
Architectural and travel photography

About the authors
The book is the work of two influential figures in the history of photography:

Helmut Gernsheim (1913–1995): A German-born photographer, collector, and historian. After immigrating to England in 1937, he developed a passion for collecting historic photographs. He and Alison amassed a massive collection that is now housed at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas in Austin.
Alison Gernsheim (died 1969): Helmut`s wife and co-author. She was instrumental in the creation of the Gernsheims` collection and collaborated with Helmut on several major works before her death.

Gernsheim collection: In addition to their writing, the Gernsheims are celebrated for their monumental collection of historic photographs, which includes the world`s earliest-known photograph, taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826.
