`- In the days before there were movies and television, people flocked to clubs and cafés to watch their favorite singers and dancers. At the turn of the last century, Paris, France, was perhaps the most exciting entertainment center in all of Europe, if not the world. Perhaps no artist has captured the thrill and wonder of that time in the `City of Light` better than Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
Henri fell in love with art as a child. His early drawings of horses and riders, circus performers, and the family dog reveal his close observation of the world around him. Later, as a student, he was entranced by the hustle and bustle of Paris and tried to re-create its lively atmosphere in his works. The vibrant personalities from the entertainment world who filled the night with song and dance were not only the artist`s friends but also his inspirations.
Relying upon some of Lautrec`s best-known paintings, drawings, and posters, as well as period photographs, award-winning author Robert Burleigh spins the tale of this whimsical and talented artist, evoking the places and characters that he immortalized and celebrated in his art.`
