64970) The Documentary Conscience A Casebook in Film Making , Alan Rosenthal , University of California Press 1980
Alan Rosenthal is himself an experienced film-maker, and his earlier interview book, New Documentary in Action, has been widely used in classes-its practical, thoughtful approach to the problems documentary makers face day by day proved both useful and stimulating to large numbers of students. Now Rosenthal applies his intensive inter-viewing technique to a group of new film-makers. Whether their work is in-tended for theaters, television broadcast, or specialized distribution, all are concerned with using film to focus public attention on pressing con-temporary issues. Rosenthal gets them to speak of their tenacious commitment to exposing these issues; of the manifold ethical problems of access, confidentiality, and point of view that arise in documentary; of the grinding difficulties of financing which only an ineradicable sense of mission enables these dedicated people to overcome. Their projects range from small, highly personal enterprises like Will Roberts` Men`s Lives or Jill Godmilow`s Antonia through Barbara Kopple`s ordeal in Harlan County to a full-scale vérité production like Grey Gardens to the ambitious, complex British TV series `The World at War.` American, Canadian and British work is all represented; the film-makers interviewed include Emile de Antonio, Mort Silverstein, Tom Haydon, Robert Vas, Abe Osheroff, Beryl Fox, Cinda Firestone, Douglas Leiterman, Mike Rubbo, Amalie Rothschild, and many others.

Originally trained as a lawyer, Alan Rosenthal has made more than 30 films, mainly in Israel and the US (One God, which he directed, has won several festival gold medals). He helped film the Eichmann trial and train Israel`s TV documentary staff. He has taught at York University, Toronto, at San Francisco State University, and at the Australian National Film School, as well as Hebrew University, Jerusalem. He has published in Film Quarterly, Sight & Sound, Cineaste, and other journals.
