Veoma očuvana.
The entire concept of the title is difficult to define. Now we mean by designer someone who produces a sketch or picture for somebody else to manufacture, mostly. The idea of starting with raw materials and ending up with the finished product died with the Arts and Crafts Movement but they were so precious and snobby with no real regard for manufacturing processes that only the independently wealthy could indulge in.This is part of the argument the author poses but refuses to get drawn into.
The majority of the book is occupied with designers whose designs could be proven by documentation with little fear of contradiction or misattribution.
The span is six centuries as Michelangelo and Cellini for example had parts of their designs disseminated across Europe by pupils and apprentices. The largest segments are masters of perioda.Robert Adam, Pugin Knox, Dresser, all coincidentally Brits, but expanded upon for the sheer breadth of their legacy across multiple disciplines.
The twentieth century is covered well including the unpronounceable scadinavian furniture designers who are now enjoying a revival in appreciation.
The book is a brave attempt to cover what should really take up ten volumes but thirty years ago on the date of publication had few rivals.
