Can we revive the forgotten world of Lemkos destroyed by post-war resettlements?
The album The Forgotten Images is the answer to that longing. It contains a selection of 140 photographs taken by American Lemko John Masley during his two visits in his family village. Berest near Krynica, in years 1923 and 1938. They depict various aspect of everyday life of the Lemkos: village buildings, annual cycle of agricultural activities, farm works, fairs in Grybow, fete at the orthodox church in Krynica, weddings, social life. The majority of the photographs are family portraits and group photos of the inhabitants of the village. A comparison of the photographs taken during those two trips clearly demonstrates transformation of the Lemko countryside - changes in constructions, traditional costumes influenced by urban fashion. Masley as a perfect documentalist, was not only a good photographer, but also had a great sense of reality observation. And this came from his origin, he actually was an integral part of the world he documented.
