Piet Mondrian (1872—1944) was one of the great revolutionaries of twentieth-century art. Indeed, his influence has extended, far beyond painting, to sculpture, architecture, and almost every field of the applied arts and design. No one, looking at his early landscapes and still lifes, could possibly have divined from them the course which his career was to take. Impressionism and Fauvism both left their mark on him, but it was not until 1911, when he moved from Holland to Paris, that he reached the turning-point: his contact with the Cubist movement. He now began to omit the descriptive elements from his painting until, in about 1917, his mature abstract style emerged.
Confining his palette to the primary colours (and black, grey and white), and using only rectangular shapes disposed on black grids, Mondrian pushed the concept of abstraction to (seemingly) its furthest limits — creating works of a rarefied beauty, in which colours, forms and lines are poised in subtly varied relationships. `His long search for harmony and intensity`, wrote Herbert Read, `for precision and equilibrium, in each individual work and in his whole creative achievement, was a passion that could not be denied.` And yet such paintings as `New York City 1 ` and `Broadway Boogie Woogie` (composed in his last years, after he had emigrated to the United States) provide vivid proof that Mondrian`s art, for all its uncompromising austerity, was never divorced from life. It remained the utterly personal art of a dedicated humanist.
Hans L. C. Jaffé is Professor of the History of Modern and Contemporary Art at Amsterdam University and the leading authority on Mondrian. He has also compiled the standard work on the De Stijl movement, of which Mondrian was a co-founder and (among the painters) the principal member. In his new book Professor Jaffe traces Mondrian`s career through all its phases, analysing the qualities, and the crucial significance, of his art. The plates, likewise, lead from the early naturalistic works to the semi-abstract paintings of Mondrian`s middle period, and then on to the compositions of his maturity.
With 139 illustrations, including 48 hand-mounted colour plates.
