Painting was Albrecht Dürer`s passion — so much so that he abandoned his wife on their honeymoon in order to go on a painting expedition. Such unconventional behaviour was typical of him. Born in 1471, Dürer was the first German artist to be influenced by the painters of the Italian Renaissance, and he seized eagerly on techniques and ideas which seemed startling at the time. But though he learnt much from them, his paintings and engravings were always distinctly his own.
Dürer lived in a turbulent age, when Europe stood poised between two worlds. One was the world of the Middle Ages, with its devils, saints and witches and unquestioning piety. The other was the modern world, in which the Church`s corrupt complacency was shattered, when Martin Luther hammered his statement of belief onto the church door at Wittenberg, and started a religious revolution. Dürer considered himself very much a man of this new age. His sympathy with the rebellious Protestants, his interest in new artistic techniques, even his fashionably long hair marked him as a man who looked forward rather than backward.
Albrecht Dürer`s art has captivated generations of admirers, and this book contains over 200 illustrations, many in colour, depicting much of his finest work. Through them we can see the world again as Dürer saw it : delicate landscapes show us the countries through which he travelled ; bold, lively portraits show the strong, often ruthless faces of the kind of men who shaped the Renaissance ; even wayside flowers, or the quivering ears of a hare are captured forever in Dürer`s wonderfully observed drawings. This book is not only the record of a great artist`s achievements ; it also tells the story of an unusual and adventurous man, living in one of the most exciting periods in Western history.
