Why Finland? asks the author in his introduction.
The Finnish cinema may not have produced a director of major international stature, but among the several hundred feature films that have been made in Finland since 1907, there is much buried treasure.
Peter Cowie, in this racy and pioneering study, discusses the great themes that course through the Finnish film tradition: the war films (and perhaps no other European country has been so often forced to arms this century); the pastoral entertainments, with their lyrical vision of a unique landscape; then the social preoccupations of the `new wave` of Finnish directors.
Some names, like Jörn Donner and Risto Jarva, have succeeded in reaching an audience beyond Finland.
