He was Visitor in Theatre at Balliol College, Oxford in 1986, has been President of English P.E.N. since 1990, and has written numerous plays for the stage, including the West End and Broadway hit The Dresser. In 1984 he wrote and presented a thirteen-part history of the theatre, All the World`s a Stage, which was shown on BBC2.
The book`s structure follows the exploitation of a play, dealing with different stages of the process from writers, agents and producers to casting and rehearsals, performance, critics and so on. Historically it ranges from the theatre of Roman and Greek times to the present day, and covers a wide spectrum of British, European and American theatre.
