This catalogue and its accompanying exhibition have been designed to illustrate some of the problems and solutions that may typically be encountered in the process of authenticating Byzantine antiquities. An attempt has been made to provide a representative selection of suspect pieces by period, medium, and object type. What emerges is a sampling of “methods”—methods whereby a forger sets about producing his fake, and methods whereby a scholar sets about exposing that deception.
