Master Pavol of Levoca: the master sculptor from the town of Levoca, in Slovakia, was born in 1470. He was by far the most significant Gothic Sculptor from Slovakia, and favored the old Gothic style, while most of his peers were establishing the Mature Gothic tradition. Master Pavol`s most famous piece is his magnificent Gothic High Altar in St. James Church, in Levoca. This is the highest wooden altar in the world, at a height of more than 61 feet. This book is written in Slovak, with translations into German, Russian, French and Hungarian. Jaromir Homola is a lecturer at the Institute of Christian art history at the Catholic Theological Faculty at Charles University in Prague.
