It is the affair of industry to fashion or perform and glassmaking is one of the oldest industries, but industry only flourishes under reasonably stable social conditions. And so, against a background of world events, herein will be found an anatomy of world glass, with a more detailed account of British glass, a mere fraction of the whole. Perhaps there may be some instruction as to the latter, but for the rest guidance only is intended, and specialist volumes and collections must be studied.
After an introductory pilgrimage through history, glancing at the glassmakers of Egypt, Syria, and Rome, the story widens to discuss the glass and glassmakers of the later Western and Byzantine Empires, of the Islamic countries, of Venice, and of Western Europe, particularly Germany, the Low Countries, France, and England; explains the processes of glass decoration; describes in greater detail the glassmaking of England before and during the Stuart and Hanoverian periods, with special chapters on Jacobite glass, and Commemorative glass.
The accepted artistic and decorative processes applied to glass are dealt with, and the human and personal side becomes still more apparent in the chapters on Jacobite and Commemorative glass.
A special feature of the book is the 96-page section of photogravure illustrations, depicting more than 450 glasses dating from the fifth century B.C. until recent times.

Edward Barrington Haynes was born in 1889 at St.Margaret`s on Thames and died in 1957. He was educated at Kelly College, entered a family business, and found interest in anything out of doors. He found a liking for ancient glass, and gave the national collections a few objects, ranging from marked fragments of ancient glass to a large sea elephant.
