Beyond Belief: A Chronicle of Murder & Its Detection by Emlyn Williams [BOOK CLUB EDITION / 1968]
Hardcover // Myra Hindley Ian Brady
EMLYN WILLIAMS
From the Author’s Foreword:
“‘But how can a self-respecting writer like you be spending over a year writing a book about such a ghastly case?’ My answer is a simple one. For me, just as no physical aberration can ever be too extraordinary to interest the medical scientist, so no psychological phenomena can be forbidden to the serious and dispassionate writer, however ‘unsavory’ the details.”
The Moors Murders are the most brutal, senseless and cold-blooded killings to have occurred in Great Britain in many years. Between November 1963 and October 1965, Ian Brady, clerk, and Myra Hindley, typist, killed at least three—and possibly as many as five—young people varying in age from ten to seventeen, for no apparent motive.
On May 6, 1966, the two murderers were sentenced to life imprisonment (capital punishment has been abolished in England). Beyond Belief, an uncanny feat of re-creation of the minds, hearts and motivations of the two killers, is the story of this case. In it Emlyn Williams has achieved superbly his objective: “The dual accuracy of history and of imaginative understanding.”
About the Author
Emlyn Williams began writing novels at school in Wales, but stopped abruptly at the age of seventeen on reaching Oxford, where he became beguiled by the theater. He stayed beguiled for many years, writing plays and acting continuously on both sides of the Atlantic. His credits as a playwright include Night Must Fall and The Corn Is Green; as an actor he has created prominent roles in Montserrat, A Man for All Seasons, The Deputy, Emlyn Williams as Charles Dickens and Emlyn Williams as Dylan Thomas Growing Up, among others.
In 1962 Mr. Williams’ first book, George: An Early Autobiography, was published here and became a Book-of-the-Month Club choice. Beyond Belief, a very different kind of work, is his second book.
