67878) The World’s Great ARCHITECTURE From the Pyramids to the Centre Pompidou , General editor: Patrick Nuttgens ; Optimum Books 1980 ,

This book tells the story of the great buildings of the world from Stonehenge to the present day. It does more than provide a dry list of names, dates, dimensions and architectural styles: it deals with architecture as the solution to a complex interplay of problems. What is the building to be used for? How will it relate to the town or countryside around it? How will the design be affected by the current political, social and religious set up, and by technical and material constraints? Above all, what do the people com-missioning the building want the finished architecture to say to posterity about their idea of man, society and his place in nature?

These questions are answered in the twenty or so chapters that go to make up this book, each of which covers a major civilization or historical period. In each case architecture is considered as a unity, and as a response to the varying needs of the society that created it. Temples and churches are seen as the visualization of religious and philo-sophical concepts; where a prevalent ideology, such as military might and expansion in ancient Rome, or the cult of beauty and antiquity in the European Renaissance, held sway, its effect on architecture is considered. Where architectural styles were influenced by technological discoveries, or by design ideas from the other arts, there will be a discussion covering the general influences of the age which will put the buildings into context and will enable the reader to understand them as they were intended as an engineering solution to artistic and social needs.

Each chapter is written, under the general editorship of Dr Patrick Nuttgens, by an expert on that particular civilization or period, who is in many cases also a practising architect. The text is supplemented by nearly 500 illustrations, 120 of them in color, and including reconstructions, plans, and contemporary architects` drawings. All these features will make this book appeal to anyone who wants to know what to look for in a building, as well as to the more knowledgeable enthusiast who wants to see architecture in the context in which it was created.
