Social conditions in Japan at the present time are highly conducive to the realization of architectural design of the highest quality. This is due not only to the accessibility of advanced technology and mechanical power, but also because Japan still has a fund of artisans able to perform manual work impossible for machines. This is a condition indispensable for giving expession to creativity in design. In addition to these social conditions, Japan also has its own characteristic natural conditions and traditional culture. Japan`s tradition of wooden architecture, as manifest in the Ise Shrine and the Katsura Detached Palace, is well-known. It would be erroneous to assume, however, that contemporary Japanese architects necessarily conceive their designs with this tradition in mind. An uncritical return to nature or to traditional culture is not occurring at present and is not likely to occur in the form occupies center stage.
