OPIS:
The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Energy Project, not seeking to compete with national projects, concentrates its work and this status report on a 15 to 50 year time period, with some long-term considerations, and on global problems. The project is focusing on the selection of available options during the transition period of the energy shortage, with consideration of the available resources, demands, constraints, and strategies involved. Fourteen papers cover these areas. The purpose of the project is to arrive at strategies that will select the best options to enable the production and handling of enough energy to provide for as many as 12 billion people. Options considered are solar energy and energy systems embedding. Constraints cover the impact of waste heat on climate and risk assessment. Geoengineering and energy islands are suggested for the post-transition period.
