For many years now the destruction of the American city has been continuing, in order to provide for the maximum use of the private car. In some cases the results have been stimulating, in others, disastrous. In the last ten years, European cities have begun to follow this trend. Yet the private car is still the most convenient vehicle yet invented for all users, from shoppers to commuters, and no increase in congestion is likely to stop people from using it. If, however, alternative systems of movement are developed which will give even more delight and convenience to the user, the destruction or construction of city centres today to provide for the private car may be found to have been unnecessary.
This book is concerned primarily with the movement of people rather than cars, and in particular with short distance rather than long distance movement. The author discusses the future city and how some of the systems available today could be incorporated. He shows some of the ways in which public transport in existing cities could be implemented by the addition of new systems of movement. Moving pavements and non-stop systems are discussed in detail and also some of the technology available today, which is in need of development if public transport is ever to become as convenient and enjoyable to use as the private car.
