`About This Edition

This is a facsimile of the deluxe limited edition of 1907 that was illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Rackham [1867-1939! was the first and the greatest of the illustrators to succeed John Tenniel, whose drawings had provided the original interpretation of Lewis Carroll`s masterpiece in 1885. Tenniel, however, had not illustrated the book in color; and thus Rackham was the pioneer in that respect.

The 1907 publication of Alice`s Adventures in Wonderland was so noteworthy that it was hailed in a witty prefatory poem by the English poet Austin Dobson, which here precedes Lewis Carroll`s own introductory poem.

This Gramercy Books edition reproduces the text and art of the 1907 edition exactly, with the exception of certain small changes such as the printing of the color plates on colored paper rather than tipping them in, and the deletion of captions, a slightly smaller page size, and repagination of the front matter.

The changes have been made to accommodate the modern reader and observe modern publishing conventions but do not otherwise affect the readability, power, or charm of the original.`
