‘What is it’, asks Mr. Nehru, who has written a Foreword to this book, ‘that draws men to the high mountains and to the deserts? What urge leads them to write about them?’ Though the author of Himalayan Circuit, an Indian High Court Judge, would not claim to be a dedicated climber or explorer, he makes the reader share to the full his own response to the magic of the mountain world in this account of a tour on which he accompanied a party of officials in the region north of Simla where the frontiers of Kashmir, Tibet, and former British India meet.

The main part of the journey lay in a series of wild valleys beyond the main Himalayan range, where only a small portion of the land is cultivable, and the sparse Mongolian inhabitants live in small hamlets and Buddhist monasteries. In these parts—inaccessible for eight months of the year — difficulties and even dangers were great. Not from the people, who are generally peaceful, but from heights, cold, glaciers, torrents, avalanches and improvised bridges. The author’s descriptions of the secluded communities and individuals he encountered are shrewd and sympathetic, he has an eye for the majestic and the minute in Nature, and his writing has an individual and pleasing touch.

The book is illustrated with photographs taken by the author, and a map showing the route which he followed.

G. D. KHOSLA G. D. Khosla was bom in 1901` and belongs to a family of blight caste Hindus of Northern India: In 1919 he joined Lincoln’s Inn. and later went up to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. On his return home in 1926, the year he was called to the Bar, he began work as a junior civil servant and also started writing stories and articles in English. He was appointed a High Court Judge in 1944.
