FROM THE PREFACE:
This volume presents a developmental model of learning and performance that involves a synthesis of... Piaget`s structural theory and information-processing theory. The model derives executive functions from structures and specifies the relationship between executive functions and performance. Thus, it is a developmental theory and is, at the same time, precise enough to be easily testable.
The text is divided into three sections. The first contains four chapters. The first two chapters present a brief overview of the historical events that shaped the Zeitgeist in the United States in about 1970, when cognitive theory entered the mainstream of developmental learning. The model itself is presented in Chapter 3. Assumptions of the model and its implications are explored in the context of an extensive review of the relevant research in Chapter 4.
The second section is divided into three research chapters. Each chapter contains experiments that were designed to examine previously untested implications of the model. The last section of the book summarizes the results of experiments presented in the research chapters and presents a refined statement of the model based upon those findings.
... Although this book was written with the advanced undergraduate in mind, it is primarily aimed at an audience of graduate students and professionals in child development and education. Although the book is a monograph, not a guide to either child development or education, the work was conducted with an eye on the classroom and what has become known as `instructional psychology.`
