M. L. J. `Jane` Abercrombie was a British psychologist who contributed to the theory and practice of education through her teaching, research, lecturing and writing. In particular, she carried out pioneer research into the use of groups in learning with medical, architectural and education students, and she shared with diverse audiences in many countries her extensive knowledge and expertise as a teacher who used the methods and principles of group analytic psychotherapy.

Minnie Abercrombie (14 November 1909 – 25 November 1984), also known as M. L. J. Abercrombie, was a British zoologist, educationalist and psychologist. She was known for her work on invertebrates and her work in the publishing industry, conducted with her husband, Michael Abercrombie. She also contributed to the theory and practice of education through her teaching, research, lecturing and writing. In particular, she carried out pioneer psychological research into the use of groups in learning with medical, architectural and education students, and she shared with diverse audiences in many countries her extensive knowledge and expertise as a teacher who used the methods and principles of group analytic psychotherapy.

How do we make decisions? Constantly we are receiving information through our sense organs, but how do we interpret this information; and how do we act on the conclusions we reach? Mrs Johnson Abercrombie`s book is concerned with the factors that influence the making of judgements, and particularly judgements in science.
Most of our judgements are influenced by unconscious factors involving past experience and what we ourselves believe to be true. Mrs in to Abercrombie`s hypothesis is that we may make better judgements if we become aware of the factors that influence their formation. We may then be able to consider alternative judgements and choose from many rather than blindly accepting the first that comes. To tester hypothesis Mrs Abercrombie devised an experimental teaching course with medical students and the progress of this experiment forms the basis of this book.
