Joy, associated with Stress? When we think of these two concepts, they seem to be oxymorons. But modern stress is more complex than the familiar episodes of carnage that we see on the evening news. Stress influences our children at school. Stress also affects our performance as adults, influencing our work, our play, and our relationships. Even the lack of Stress can have a negative effect on the elderly. As a medical doctor, Peter Hanson has seen how stress can affect over 90% of all illnesses, aches, and pains. He also sees a nation turning to drugs and other passive “cures”. (One of the fastest growing prescriptions is the anti-depressant category, in pediatrics!) The same insights he gives his patients are here in his book.

5.0 out of 5 starsOne of the Best Books on Stress That I`ve Read
By Brian E. Walsh on October 17, 2005
Format: Paperback
I am a hypnotherapist. A few years ago, I wanted to hold stress management workshops. To support this endeavor, I wanted solid knowledge in all aspects of stress. I purchased pre-packaged courses and researched over 20 books. I found that Dr. Hanson`s, `The Joy of Stress` was probably the most insightful and informative of the bunch. His use of graphics was inspired.

I came across this book accidentally but afetr reading about twenty pages, I ordered my own from Amazon.
All you ever wanted to know about stress and more besides.
Dr. Hanson goes into the story of stress and it`s effects in a very thorough way. The book is written in plain English so that the general reader is left with a good comprehensive understanding of the topic without feeling overwhelmed with medical jargon and complex terminology.
This is a very human book in the sense that the author puts the reader right at the heart of his case. he relates decsions which can affect our stress levels to us.He writes in a factual way without appearing judgemental or condescending. In my view this is one of the great strengths of the volume. Dr. Hanson does not adopt a health fascist tone like so many do or sound self-righteous.
The clarity of the discourse is another clear advantage to this text. With a lively and positive style it sets out very clearly what can be done to combat stress. Despite being published in 1986 the message it brings is still vital but topical. Perhaps it could be updated for the new century but until then I highly recommend this book as a handbook to use to make all of our lives better
