New Foundations of Quantum Mechanics
Derivation of Quantum Theory from Non-quantal Foundations and Repudiation of Dualism in Physics and Philosophy by ALFRED LANDÉ
Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Physics Ohio State University
It is unsatisfactory that certain phenomena in physics are accounted for on the assumption that beams of electrons, etc., consist of dis-crete particles and others on the assumption that they are waves. Professor Landé believes that this dualistic view is unnecessary, not only on methodological grounds but also from the standpoint of physics. By making use of the quantum rule for the exchange of linear momentum, established by W. Duane in 1923, Professor Landé is able to show that matter diffraction, coherence and other wave-like phenomena can be fully explained on a unitary particle theory of matter.
He also discusses the more fundamental problem of the origin of the quantum laws themselves, arguing that the laws of quantum mechanics are natural consequences of the same general postulates of symmetry and invariance, which are known from deterministic mechanics, once the generally probabilistic character of microphysical data is accepted.
