Recent years have seen a symbiosis of the fields of elementary particle physics and the astrophysics of the early universe. This text presents the background of the subjects and the latest developments at a level suitable for a physics undergraduate. After introductory chapters on elementary particles and their interactions and role in the expanding universe, the problems and challenges of cosmological asymmetries, dark matter and dark energy are presented, followed by chapters on the growth of cosmic structure, on high energy cosmic rays and on particle processes in stars. A balance is maintained between theory and experiment and the text supplemented with over 100 problems, together with answers and model solutions.
Review
`It is unusual to find a volume with so many virtues. Particle Astrophysics is well written, up-to-date, well balances, and always aware of the audience for which it is intendedThe whole work makes good reading and is clear about what is known and where the next horizons lie. For all college libraries.`--CHOICE, K. L. Schick
`Perkins (particle and astrophysics, Oxford University) provides background on particle physics and the astrophysics of the early universe in this text for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Introductory chapters cover the interactions of elementary particles and their role in the expanding universe. Cosmological asymmetries, dark matter, and dark energy are examined, and final chapters turn to the growth of cosmic structure in high energy cosmic rays and the particle processes in stars. Worked examples, problems, and solutions are included. Some knowledge of quantum mechanics and special relativity is assumed.`--SciTech Book News
