This text introduces the general principles of animal physiology, illustrated by suitable examples from both vertebrates and invertebrates, and brings out similarities in function, where these exist, between different animals. Emphasis is placed on modern developments in cellular physiology, but up-to-date accounts of the physiology of whole animals are included.

In this new edition individual details have been updated and redundant ones removed where necessary. Some chapters have undergone extensive revision - amoeboid and ciliary movement are now combined into a broader chapter on cell motility; the structure and contractile mechanisms of muscle have been extensively revised, as has the mechanisms of hormone action; and the chapter on nervous integration has been rewritten to include such topics as `command` neurones, central pattern generators and modern work on the cerebellum and cerebral cortex. A new chapter on the immune system has been added, in which the emphasis is on its cellular aspects.
