59579) Essentials of Bio-organic Chemistry , R.W. Hanson , London 1984 , Osnove bioorganske hemije
An understanding of selected areas of organic chemistry is essential for students of biological subjects. The main interest of these students is in the structure of naturally occurring molecules and the ways in which these are degraded or synthesised in cells. Although most biochemistry and chemistry texts deal with the structure of naturally occurring molecules, very few deal specifically with the chemistry which underlies the metabolism of these compounds. A consequence of this is that biology students have in the past been obliged to use non-specialised chemistry texts containing much irrelevant and synthetic chemistry. In contrast this book has been written to cater specifically for students of biological sciences. The author uses a comparative approach to describe those reactions of functional groups which are involved in the metabolism of cells. Relevant stereochemical phenomena are described and there is a discussion of catalysis to explain the mode of action of enzymes. Enzyme inhibitors are dealt with and there is a final chapter in which the roles of important co-enzymes are described.
