Discusses various hypotheses of the origin of the solar system and the Earth, of the internal structure and geotectonics of fhe Earth, describes the techniques of reconstructing the past of the Earth`s crust, provides a background on palaeonfology and its fechnique, and gives a detailed description of the development of the crust in the Precambrian, Early Palaeozoic, Late Palaeozoic, Mesozoic, and Cainozoic eras. Is intended as a textbook for students of the nongeological departments of Oil, mining, and civil engineering faculties, and the geological prospecting departments of technical colleges.



The compilers of this textbook are welt known in world geological circles for their contributions at international geological, oil, and gas congresses. A number of their papers have been translated in the United States, the German Democratic Republic, and Algeria.
The Late Prof. Yu. M. Vasiliev, D.Sc. (Geol.) was Prorector of the Gubkin Institute Of the Petrochemical and Gas Industry in Moscow, and held the Chair of Geology there. He was a specialist in prospecting for petroleum at great depths, was one of the sponsors of the first ultradeep boreholes drilled in the USSR, and supervised fćthe drilling of fhe Aralsor and Biikzhal ultradeep wells in the Caspian depression.
Prof. V. S. Milnichuk, D.Sc. (Geol.), is the present holder of the chair of geology af the Gubkin Institute. He is an expert on the Geology and Petroleum resources of the Aralo-Caspian region and the Caspian depression, and was one of the leaders of the drilling of the first boreholes in the USSR.
Prof. M. S. Arabaji, D.Sc. (Geol.), lectures in the geology department Of the Gubkin Institute on the application of mathematical techniques and computers to the study of geological structures and the forecasting of petroleum resources.
All three authors of this textbook have been awarded the Gubkin Prize of the USSR Scientific and Technical Society of the Oil and Gas Industry.
