ABOUT THIS BOOK: Despite several decades of research, no clear
and unambiguous description can be given of the forces that hold individual protons and neutrons together in an atomic nucleus. Physi-cists therefore employ models to interpret experimental observations. This book is a descriptive picture of the most widely accepted models of atomic nuclei and a presentation of the experimental evidence that gives credence to the models. Nuclear models discussed include the liquid drop, optical, and shell models, the unified model developed by Bohr and Mottelson, the asymmetric rotor model, and the supercon-ductivity model. Written with a minimum of mathematical detail, here is a study that can give the beginning physics student or non-profes-sional reader a considerable insight into a complex subject.
The Author: C. SHARP COOK is Physics Consultant to the
Scientific Director, U. S. Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory, San Francisco. After receiving a Ph.D. in Physics from Indiana University in 1948, Dr. Cook was an Assistant Professor at Wash-ington University for five years. A Fulbright scholar in 1961-62 at Aarhus University in Denmark, he is the author of Modern Atomic and Nuclear Physics (Van Nostrand, 1961), and a frequent contributor to scholarly journals.
