Biochemistry has been at the centre of a vast expansion of biological understanding. This work looks at the methods and finds which unify one`s knowledge of the mechanism of life: biochemical theories approach questions of the origins of life on earth, and biochemical techniques help to explain the interactions of viruses with their hosts and to tailor-make the vital drugs in the pharmacologist`s armoury. The pace of biochemical research shows no sign of slackening, from the determination of the structures of the complex molecules of life to the myriad of chemical reactions that drive the workings of the cell.

Professor Steven Rose was born in 1938 in London. He went with an open scholarship to King`s College, Cambridge. After taking a double first in biochemistry he read for his doctorate at the Maudsley Institute of Psychiatry, London. He held both the Beit Memorial and Guinness Fellowships at New College, Oxford, and was then for five years at Imperial College, London. He is now Professor of Biology at the Open University. He has also spent periods as visiting lecturer at Leipzig University and at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita in Rome.
The main theme of his research has been the investigation of the biochemical basis of brain function and memory and the problem of control processes within the living cell. Apart from research papers on these topics, he has published a number of more general articles in Science Journal, New Scientist, and elsewhere.
He has edited a book on chemical and biological warfare, and with his wife, a sociologist, has written Science and Society (Allen Lane The Penguin Press, 1969). They are founder members of the British Society for Social Responsibility in Science, and live, with their two sons, in Camden Town.
