`In this scholarly yet intensely personal history, Edina Bećirević explores the widespread ethnic cleansing that occurred in Bosnia and Herzegovina following the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Bećirević, a native Bosnian, argues that war crimes committed by Serbs against non-Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995 fully meet the criteria for genocide established after World War II by the Genocide Convention of 1948.

A former journalist who reported on trials of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) between 1997 and 2001, Bećirević presents archival evidence showing that the genocide against Bosnian Muslims was not only planned and implemented under the careful watch of Serbian leaders, including Slobodan Milošević, Radovan Karadžić, and Ratko Mladić, but that the program was carried out by a wide range of political, security, and military actors who have yet to be held accountable. Bećirević`s essential history draws upon parliamentary transcripts, interviews with witnesses, and the extensive documentary archives of the ICTY, shaping an in-depth study of the devastating and dehumanizing effects of genocide on the destinies of individuals, and the mechanisms of its denial in Bosnia and Herzegovina.`
