The author is a scion of a family of Afghan origin which ruled the small
princely state of Pataudi, close to Delhi. His elder brother, the late Nawab of
Pataudi, was a well-known cricketer. He was himself a soldier of distinction in the
Indian Army and, after 1947, in Pakistan. He served as Pakistan`s diplomatic
representative successively in Malaysia, Yugoslavia and Indonesia; and he briefly
became a minister in General Yahya`s government. He had differences, which were
to his credit, with Ayub, Yahya and Bhutto, the last of whom imprisoned him.
The theme of his book is a search for his identity by means of an anecdotal
ramble over the history of the sub-continent and its problems in modern times. It
is an easily read, but not profound, commentary on almost every subject under the
sun. The author emerges as a charming companion of sound and strongly held
principles, and of deep Islamic faith.
