This readable and stimulating book brings together the author`s lectures and essays on the present world economic and political crisis. It is a crisis, Frank ably demonstrates, which was unexpected by conventional economists, who declared it impossible belore it happened, and refused to acknowledge it once it was underway. Frank makes very clear the complete failure of the Keynesian-influenced economic theorists to understand the world-wide character and pervasiveness of the crisis. The author neglects neither Paul Samuelson and his followers nor Milton Friedman and his monetarist disciples, and establishes the failure of all of them to cope with the reality of economic crisis.

Frank argues that the world has entered upon a profound crisis in the process of capitalist accumulation, one that will bring with it major shifts in the international and intersectoral divisions of labor, and will therefore give rise to sharpened international contradictions and deepening class polarization within nations.`He then analyzes the uneven effects these changes will:have on both the industrialized countries of the center and those of the so-called Third World. A substantial preface includes Frank’s candid reconsideration of dependency theory in the light of the current international reality.

Andre Gunder Frank is Professor in Development Studies at the University of East Anglia. He was born in Berlin and educated in the United States where, in 1957, he received a Ph.D in economics. He has taught economics, history, and other social sciences in the United States, Canada, Belgium, West Germany, Mexico, Chile, and the United Kingdom and he has published numerous articles and books, the most recent of which include On Capitalist Underdevelopment, Mexican Agriculture 1521-1630 and World Accumulation 1492-1789. Professor Frank is married and has two children.
