Choices and Constraints : Essays in Honour of Fred Singleton

John J. Horton, Frederick Bernard Singleton, Marko Milivojevic

Berg Pub 1992 461 strana

očuvanost 5-

A collection of papers written in honour of Fred Singleton by a panel of authorities on Eastern Europe. Contributors assess the present and future prospects for Yugoslavia in the light of that country`s social, political and cultural heritage as it has evolved in the years since 1945. A general overview of Yugoslavia`s geography, economy, society and political institutions is followed by a group of papers in which the focus narrows to examine specific topics such as military intelligence and security, ecology and the management of the environment, nationalism and tourism.
Among the 14 substantive chapters, a few, such as Marko Milivojevic`s work on the country`s intelligence service, are outstanding and original. Though completed in 1990, several presage Yugoslavia`s political decay and impending civil war. Madzar`s chapter on the economy depicts the failure of balanced regional development; Plestina notes the recent `fear of the `other` nationality creeping into public life,` and Ramet explains the `republicanization ` of the press. Of course, there are limitations. Allcock`s emphasis on Serbian and Slovenian nationalist `rhetoric` misses the subtlety of national expression falling between these two.
