Norman Granz and his Pablo label took over a large part of the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival (as they had done in 1975) and there were quite a few albums released that documented his all-star groups caught live and in spontaneous form. This double LP has performances not included on the other albums. A who`s who of veteran jazz greats are heard from including trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Jon Faddis and Roy Eldridge, tenors Eddie `Lockjaw` Davis, Zoot Sims and Ronnie Scott, altoist Benny Carter, trombonists Vic Dickenson and Al Grey, pianists Oscar Peterson, Count Basie and Monty Alexander, guitarist Joe Pass, bassists Niels Pedersen and Ray Brown, and drummers Bobby Durham and Jimmie Smith. The tunes they perform (in five overlapping groups) are generally fairly basic but the playing has its share of surprising moments and this two-fer gives one a strong overview of the Pablo label in the 1970s.
