This book was published in 1979 about the time when China`s top leader Deng Xiaoping started to radically reshape China`s economy and the meaning of Chinese Communism. The official Chinese Communist description was `Socialism with Chinese characteristics` or `Socialist market economy`. The result was China`s economic take-off to become a major economic force today.

With this inflow of capital came the modernization of the Chinese war machine, particularly navy ships, submarines and now an aircraft carrier, which has alarmed other Southeast Asian countries and the United States. While China`s navy was for coastal defence in the past, today they have an offensive strike force. China and the world has changed from what it was 30 years ago. Although this book gives a good history, it cries for a major revision.
