Here is the prologue of this book! ★We are living in an `unexpected age` When the news of the outbreak of a new coronavirus in Wuhan, China, was reported at the end of 2019, who could have imagined the subsequent global chaos? For many people, it was `no way, something like this could never happen.` The new coronavirus spread around the world in the blink of an eye, exceeding the common sense of coronaviruses up to that point. Not only did it result in the loss of approximately 5.5 million lives (as of January 2022), it also brought about huge economic losses and drastically changed people`s lifestyles in various countries. We are living in an `unexpected age`──. What you think, `I can`t believe something like this could happen in this era...` becomes reality. It is an unpredictable age where you don`t know what will happen, and it`s not surprising that anything will happen. What is your own reality? There are many people whose daily lives, work, and life have changed dramatically over the past two years. However, the reality of this `unexpected` reality is not limited to the coronavirus pandemic. Just since the beginning of the 21st century, we have seen the September 11 attacks, the Lehman Shock, the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Fukushima nuclear accident, and the North Korean nuclear issue. Furthermore, there are countless other events, such as Russia`s invasion of Crimea, the UK`s withdrawal from the EU, the crackdown on democratization in Hong Kong, and torrential rains around the world. All of these events have dealt an `unexpected` blow to the world beyond human prediction. Such events and changes do not necessarily occur as major incidents. A familiar example is the smartphone you are holding right now. Can you imagine life without a smartphone? Before you know it, it has become a part of you. Many people would not be able to do many of the things necessary for life, such as work emails, private communication, SNS, taking and storing photos, shopping, making reservations, and researching, without a smartphone. The dawn of personal computers began in the 1970s. We didn`t know anything about computers and only had landlines and public phones. But in just a dozen years, we learned how to use word processors, started using mobile phones, and computers became necessary for work. It became natural to connect with the world through the Internet, and smartphones became like our other selves. Human behavior, including how we communicate with others and how we interact with the world, has completely changed. Many experts are sounding the alarm about the danger that these dramatic changes pose to humanity. They say that in a rapidly changing environment, we are losing the strength and humanity that we originally possessed. The truth of this needs to be verified, but it is a change that could have such an impact. All of this is a reality that no one could have imagined. ★The `ultimate choice` is the key What the COVID-19 pandemic has inadvertently revealed is that the future is always beyond human prediction, and the events that have shaken human society up to now have taught us that the world has always brought shocks beyond human imagination. Furthermore, if we think back to the example of smartphones, the faster the technological innovation of humanity, the higher the probability of encountering an unpredictable reality that we have never experienced before. In other words, we have lived and will continue to live in a world where we do not know what will happen, and where anything that happens is not surprising. This means that the `age of the unexpected` will continue forever. So how should we live in such a world? The key to this is the `ultimate choice.` No matter what era we live in, there is an ultimate choice that humans cannot escape. Today, people may hardly be aware of this choice. In a sense, it can be said to be a `forgotten choice.` What is that ultimate choice? And how should we live in the world that lies beyond that choice? The purpose of this book is to clarify this. I hope that you, who have picked up this book, will make this ultimate choice and gain the solid strength to live in the `age of the unexpected.`
