Did someone say Stephen King? No? Well, I swear King had to have read and been inspired by A Sword Above the Night. Thematically and stylistically, this reads very much like a King novel.
I have not read King’s Under the Dome, but I know the basic premise. And A Sword Above the Night has a similar concept. A cop ventures out to a rural farmhouse to investigate an accident. The farmhouse is being used as a bed and breakfast for a handful of people. Moments after arriving, John (the cop) is alerted that ships have been coming from space and landing in the countryside. The authorities believe he may be in a landing zone. The zone is designated by a ring of energy that appears out of nowhere. Once the ring appears, electronics will be cut off and nothing living may cross the barrier. John is informed that when the ring appears the ship arrives roughly 58 minutes later. His radio then fails, and the group has 58 minutes to sort things out.
What makes this read like a King novel (besides the ring/dome idea) is the way that the characters are used. We have a group of people that are trapped in a dramatic and apparently dangerous situation, but each of the characters has their own little secrets and dramas. No one is as innocent as they first appear.
I think this is a decently entertaining read. I like the ending.
