I bought this book since short story collections with stories that are actually short are good for traveling. This short story collection turned out to be perfect for traveling. Each piece has a well-defined character, a plot twist, and an exploration of a societal question.
Several stories involved themes that related to civil rights--slaves, alien races, how outsides relate to insides--which is no surprise, considering these stories were all written in the 50s and 60s. Even though he belonged to the `Trap Door Spiders,` an all-male club, many of these stories have to do with feminist issues. Every story is written from a male perspective, and I initially wondered if some of the more unpleasant characters` attitudes(see `The Seat of Judgement`) were reflections of Del Rey. The stories, though, then show the disastrous effects of these ideas about women. Even without recognizing the subtleties in some of the writing, `Instinct` send this message home with a hammer.
Several stories also deal with male feelings towards reproduction. There were stories about the desire to have a son and about how longevity would affect feelings towards children.
