THE MEMOIRS OF HAJI MIRZA HAYDAR-‘ALI
Translated and abridged by A. Q. Faizi

The Delight of Hearts has been widely read and cherished in Persian since its publication in Bombay in 1913. Now, through A. Q. Faizi’s abridged translation, Western readers can become acquainted with the remarkable man who came to be known as “the Angel of Carmel.”

Haji Mirza Haydar-‘Ali grew up in a land torn by religious turmoil. The Shi‘ih Muslim clergy of Iran, allied with the Qajar dynasty, had vowed to exterminate the Faith and followers of Siyyid ‘Ali Muhammad, the Báb, who in 1844 had declared Himself to be the Gate to the Promised One, whose appearance was imminent.

Witnessing the barbaric persecutions around him aroused Haydar-‘Ali’s curiosity. He read the Báb’s Writings and became a believer. This marked the beginning of a lifelong odyssey that carried him through the towns and villages of Iran; to Egypt and the Sudan, where he suffered imprisonment for his beliefs; and to Turkey and the Holy Land, where he attained the presence of Bahá’u’lláh, the Promised One foretold by the Báb.

Toward the end of his life, in Haifa, Haji Mirza Haydar-‘Ali set down his recollections. His account of the tribulations he endured at the hands of fanatical mullas and their followers provides a vivid personal glimpse of nineteenth-century Middle Eastern life. Through these vignettes—of friends and enemies, martyrs and persecutors—emerges a memorable portrait of Haydar-‘Ali himself.

Throughout his sufferings he maintained both steadfast loyalty and an unshakable sense of humor. Confronted with imprisonment, treachery, or the threat of death, he never wavered in his dedication to the Covenant he had embraced.

STANJE KNJIGE:

SUSEDNE ZEMLJE I INOSTRANSTVO:
