Marlena Frick tells the story of her courtship and marriage to Miecu, a Polish doctor who settled in Britain after the war — a story of joy and optimism and good fortune until, six years after their wedding, tragedy struck. Miecu was suffering from cancer. Under the shadow of premature death, each day becomes infinitely precious, each dawn a victory to be savoured. In *All the Days of his Dying*, Marlena Frick recreates the transforming intensity of the experience, all the more moving because it was preceded by years of such idyllic happiness. Behind the honesty and integrity of the story is a rare courage. If there are depths there are also heights, with summer light flowing in the pages. In its luminous confessional quality, her story is unforgettable.
Marlena Frick was born in 1933. A Yorkshire journalist, she wrote *All the Days of his Dying* while in Portugal on a Winston Churchill Travel Award. A former reporter and feature writer on the *Yorkshire Post* and the *Daily Mail*, she now works as a sub-editor in Hull, where she and her husband went to live after their marriage. She is the author of two other books, one of which, *The Homecoming*, was filmed in France, starring Fernandel.
