Intramedullary nailing is a method of internal fixation that is confined to the major long bones, e.g. femur, tibia, humerus. Nailing is a less invasive procedure, requiring a smaller incision than open fixation and is currently very popular in orthopaedic surgery. The book gathers all of the various nails together into one source, and offers information on the pitfalls of the different nails. The organization starts with the importance of basic science, goes through anatomy and finally into the clinical importance of the nail. Coverage is specific to IM and the rapidly changing techniques and hardware, and nine new chapters are included addressing the latest techniques and hardware. There is also material on complications.

The second edition of this text is a welcome addition to the literature on orthopaedic trauma. The extensive changes found in this edition reflect the rapid evolution of intramedullary nailing. The early chapters on historical development and rationale have been updated extensively. The sections on controversies are clear, concise, and informative. Devices that are no longer in common use have been dropped from the text, and current devices are dealt with by category rather than as specific nails.
