There are six reviews in this current volume in addition to the editor`s, annual ` state of the subject` message on taxonomy. They can be divided into three pairs. There are two on multiple sclerosis, one on the possible viral aetiology, by R. I. CARP, H. B. WARNER and G. S. MERZ (p. 158), and one on the significance of viral antibodies in multiple sclerosis by E. NORRBY (p. 1). A second pair includes a valuable survey of the somewhat neglected subject of viral infections of the heart, by A. B. G. LANSDOWN (p. 70), and of the overlapping field of human enterovirus infections, by N. R. GRIST, E. J. BELL and F. ASSAAD (p. 114). The third pair are unrelated: one on hepatitis B and cancer of the liver, by W. SZMUNESS, p. 40; and one by J. H. NAKANO, M. H. HATCH, M. L. THIEME and B. NOTTAY, p. 178, on the differentiation of wild poliovirus strains and vaccine strains. All of these six reviews are valuable in their own right, and this volume continues to maintain the high standard of previous years. A. P. Waterson.
