THIS is a book covering most aspects of peripheral arterial surgery. It
will be of principal value to the young surgeon in training, both to read
throughout and also for reference. It will also appeal to the medical
student, nursing and associated staff, and, indeed, the established
surgeon occasionally involved with vascular problems.
The text is well written and easy to follow and covers clinical and
investigative aspects of diagnosis and management. There are comprehensive
descriptions of operative techniques and results of treatment.
Throughout, the book is governed by sensible, sound and considered
guidelines. Where relevant. options are discussed and consensus views
given. It is not comprehensively referenced but key articles are listed at
the end of each chapter for further reading. There are a generous
number of illustrations throughout the text which are, in general. useful
and easy to interpret. However, some of the photographs of operative
procedures are of doubtful value and might well have been better
illustrated by line drawings.
The emphasis perhaps reflects the particular interests of the authors.
There are, for instance, large sections’ on cerebral revascularization
involving the extra- and intracranial vascular tree and microsurgical
techniques. In contrast, some important and newer areas receive little
attention. Transluminal angioplasty and the question of injection
sclerotherapy for oesophageal varices seceive little consideration.
These criticisms, however, are trivial. The book is enjoyable to read
and undoubtedly of great value. It deserves a place on the library shelf
of any hospital where vascular surgery may be undertaken, either on a
regular basis or only when the occasion demands.
