The problems of the fundus of the eye were the life long study of the late Professor Arthur J. Ballantyne who brought to them an unusual patience for detail and an appreciation of their importance in the understanding of the total picture. He stimulated a generation of Glasgow ophthalmologists with his interest. Besides incorporating recent advances, the book has tried to emphasize the unique opportunities for bio-microscopy which the study of the fundus of the eye presents, and the earlier chapters are devoted to this purpose. The illustrations are mainly the work of Mr. Gabriel Donald, artist to the Department of ophthalmology in the University of Glasgow, and this book could not have been completed without his art and his capacity of moving freely with clinician and histologist in the understanding of fundal diseases.
