Maja Familić (born in 1973) is a Gurbet Romni from Novi Sad, Serbia who is also a poetess, painter and practising school teacher.
Like many Balkan Romani writers, she is well integrated into the mainstream literary scene in Serbia as well as that of the former Yugoslav federation. She began her career as a poetess by taking part in various national competitions and festivals, and publishing in literary newspapers throughout the states of the former federation. At the same time, she is part of the Romani writers’ and artists’ community in Serbia and the themes of her work – both in prose and in painting – are related to Romani culture, history and identity.
Familić has published several poetry collections, including Kad mrtvi propevaju / Kana e mule đilaben / When the dead start singing (2015), which is a trilingual volume dedicated to the victims of the Romani Holocaust.
