This is a collection of Pulitzer Prize winner ( awarded because of Annie Allen) and poet laureate of Illinois Gwendolyn Brooks` poetry along with her one and only prose work, Maud Martha, which I enjoyed most in the volume. Maud Martha really is an African-American classic, and I highly recommend this beautiful work of prose-poetry, a novella. There are scattered examples of poems that I like throughout the volume such as `The Murder,` `In the Mecca,` `Malcolm X,` `In Emmanuel`s Nightmare: Another Coming of Christ,` and a few others. Brooks knew how to use language elegantly. In some poems she painted pictures of African-American life and racism in America in a raw, intense, and truthful way. I didn`t enjoy many of the poems, but I would say I probably enjoyed at least half of the collection. I met Gwendolyn Brooks years ago when I was an undergraduate and finally after all these years later I am a little embarrassed to admit I have finally read a great deal of her poetry and her one novella
