Simeon Potter was born in London in 1898, and was educated at Kilburn Grammar School, at the University of London, and at St John`s College, Oxford. In the First World War he served with the Royal Navy. He travelled widely and for many years he taught English abroad in Czechoslovakia in the University of Brno, and in Denmark in the University of Aarhus. His keen interest in the problems of language was greatly stimulated by his close association with the Prague Linguistic Circle in its early days, and later with the London Philological Society, of which he has long been a life member. He has broadcast frequently for Prague Radio and occasionally for the BBC. For many years he kept in personal touch with several living tongues in his capacity as Adviser to Over-seas Students in the University of Southampton. His Pelican book Our Language, and his volume on Modern Linguistics in Eric Partridge`s Language Library, are now well known. Since 1945 Professor Potter has held the Baines Chair of English in the University of Liverpool.
